Spain made a solid start to the defence of their U16 European Championship crown with a comfortable 81-46 defeat of Ukraine in Grobina on Wednesday.
Turning Point: Ukraine appeared to be in the ascendency when they took a surprise 12-8 lead in the first quarter but three quick baskets from Manuel Vazquez, Pol Figueras and Victor Moreno saw the start of a 15-0 run that would put the champions in control and cripple Ukraine's confidence.
Game Hero: There were strong performances across the board from the Spanish side, which meant there was no great need for a standout performance. But Vazquez was efficient in all that he did scoring 13 points while collecting six rebounds.
Stats Don't Lie: Spain demonstrated one of their key advantages over most opponents by getting 25 of their points from their bench players. This is an area that few, if any, teams can match them in, and Ukraine predictably struggled, getting just eight from the players that didn't start the game for them.
The Bottom Line: This result was to be expected and Spain will have been pleased to get a tricky opening game out of the way, as will Ukraine, who can now focus on facing Italy on Thursday as they look to give themselves a chance of advancing from Group D.
