The fans in Pardubice were treated to an entertaining tight match between Germany and Russia in the U16 European Championship Men, with Germany able to shut down the Russians at the end to secure the win.
Vasily Martynov led the Russian team with 17 points, while Pavel Sizov contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds.
The German team were thankful for Ismet Akpinar's 20 points and 15 points from Maximillian Ugrai.
Neither team were able to secure a large advantage in the first three quarters, and Russia led 54-52 as we entered the fourth quarter.
Taras Klyundikov's three-pointer with 5:30 remaining put the Russians ahead 61-56, but Akpinar hit a 3-pointer himself to ensure a nervy finish.
Akpinar and Ugrai also contributed big rebounds as the Russian team failed to connect down the stretch, and Ugrai's follow to Akpinar's miss put Germany ahead 66-62.
Some good free-throw shooting under pressure ensured the victory.
