GAME REPORT

Greece Finish Off Poland

by Dan Casey

Greece pulled away from Poland in the final quarter of the late game in Pardubice.

Leading by 5 points as we entered the final period, the Greek team put the game away with stifling defense and a 17-5 run.

Greece's balanced attack saw four players in double-figures, led by Dimitrios Stamatis's 13 points as well as 9 points, 4 assists and 4 steals from Michail Liapis. Mikolaj Witlinski contributed 12 points and 8 boards for Poland.

The beginning of the game had seen Poland jump out to an early advantage, and they had a six-point lead before Greece closed the half with a 9-2 run, capped by Georgios Papadionysioy's lay-up as time expired to go 33-32 ahead.

When Greece then scored the first 10 points of the second half, the momentum seemed to be with them. But Poland came back to hold the Greek team scoreless for the last 3:37 of the quarter, an 8-0 run that set up an intriguing final quarter.

This time, Greece started well again, and held on for a deserved victory.
