Spain enjoyed a great start to the U16 European Championship with a 65-32 win over Latvia in Group C action at Osnovna Skola Jugoslavija in Bar, Montenegro on Thursday afternoon.
Following the win Spain took a 1-0 record in Group C before playing Bulgaria the next day while Latvia started 0-1 and will seek their first win against Poland the following day.
Albert Homs and Josep Perez led Spain with 11 points each, while Dario Brizuela added 10.
Oskars Reinfelds was the top scorer of losing side with just nine points.
Latvia struggled from the start, and scored only four points in the first quarter, and 14 in the entire second half.
The Spanish pressure on the ball was too much for Latvia to handle, and they turned the ball over 29 times, more than enough for Spain to exploit that for a big win.
The first minutes examplified the upcoming events as Spain took a 10-0 lead after five minutes.
Homs scored a jumper to push the gap to 23-8 early in the second quarter, and after Reinfelds kept Latvia not too far behind, it was time for Spain to make one more push and Perez with a good pass followed by a couple from the foul line set the gap on 38-18 after 18 minutes.
Latvia were stuck on a single point for over seven minutes, and Spain didn't need more than that to take off and decide the game way before the final buzzer.
