|Matic Rebec came up big for Slovenia with a 22-point, 10-assist double-double|
Slovenia experienced the sweet taste of victory on Day 2 of the U20 European Championship as they pulled away from Spain in the clutch to pick up a 71-63 win.
Turning Point: With the scores tied at 52 at the end of the third frame, Slovenia kicked off proceedings in the fourth by drilling three three-pointers within 76 seconds to jump ahead 61-52. This sequence left the Spanish side somewhat shell shocked and their awaited comeback attempt never materialised. Slovenia maintained the gap at or close to double-digit levels until the final buzzer.
Game Hero: Matic Rebec, who hit the third of those crucial Slovenian three-pointers, was not always accurate with his shooting but proved a constant headache for the Spanish defence. The Slovenian guard collected the tournament's first double-double in points and assists as he finished with a game-high 22 points, dished out ten assists and also grabbed five rebounds.
Stats Don't Lie: Slovenia went 13-for-30 from long-range and this level of sharpness erased their shortcomings, such as the fact they committed 12 turnovers and did not come up with even one steal in the entire game. Spain managed to get 19 offensive rebounds but that was mainly an outcome of their poor shooting (3-of-20 from three), and were still out-rebounded by Slovenia 39-34.
The Bottom Line: Slovenia's win has thrown Group B wide open already on Day 2, as four teams now have one victory apiece, including these two sides, Serbia and Germany.
