Spain was impressive during long stretches on Tuesday to kick-off their Sportland U20 European Championship campaign with a comfortable 76-54 victory over Russia.
The Iberian side went almost two minutes without a basket at the start of the game but then reeled off 27 points in eight minutes to take a 12-point lead, 27-15, at the end of the first period.
Russia came up with answers on the defensive end and gave up only 10 points in the second frame to reduce the gap to 37-30 at half-time.
Spain however passed the ball inside to Daniel Diez and Alejandro Suarez, who quickly restored their two-digit lead when the two teams returned from the locker rooms.
The Spaniards not only did not allow their opponents to come any closer but also put on a strong finish to the game to balloon the difference to 22 points.
Diez paved the way for the winners with 23 points on 9-for-13 shooting from two-point range and added seven rebounds, while point guard Jaime Fernandez finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists and Sebastian Saiz had a team-high nine rebounds to go with his 10 points.
For Russia, Aleksandr Gudumak and Artem Komolov had 15 points and 11 points respectively, in defeat.
