Another huge upset took place in Group D when no else than Lithuania was dismissed from the medal rush after an 88-73 defeat to Germany.

The shocking outcome of this result is that Lithuania will play to avoid relegation to Division B in the 13-16 Classification Games.

They will meet there with Austria, Croatia and either Serbia or Slovenia.

Germany reached a 2-1 record in the group and finished 2nd, right behind Italy.

Ukraine, following their great win over Lithuania yesterday, will march to the next phase from the 3rd spot with a 1-2 record.

No less than six German players scored in double digits, led by Niels Giffey who had 16 while Mathis Monninghoff and Ole Wendt added 15 each.

Augustas Peciukevicius was the top scorer of Lithuania with 18 points, Dovydas Redikas added 13 with 5 assists while Saulius Kulvietis finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Germany reached 88 points and won a tough deciding game despite their top player Patrick Heckmann finished with just 10 points and took only six shots from the floor, but his teammates stepped up to sting Lithuania.

Once again Lithuania had trouble to protect the ball, and combined no less than 23 turnovers.

The first quarter saw Lithuania with the upper hand taking a 16-23 lead after a 9-0 run as Peciukevicius combined 5 in a row.

Both sides continued to burn the nets and the first quarter finished with Lithuania up 26-31, but defense started to play a bigger role in the second quarter when the teams remained close to each other and entered the half time break with Lithuania up 44-45.

Heckmann opened the 2nd half with his first points in the game, and put Germany on top, and that was actually the last lead change of the evning.

Monninghoff and Giffey from the arc pushed the gap to 61-52 by the end of the 3rd period, and another assist of Heckmann to a three pointer set the gap on 12 early in the closing quarter.

Lithuania committed 5 turnovers in the first 2:13 minutes of the 4th quarter, that didn't allow them any chance to fix the situation as Germany remained cool and smooth on the way to the great upset.
