Serbia, Greece And Slovenia Ruin U20 Weekend For Hosts

28 June 2010

One of the main attractions in basketball over the weekend was the Torneo V. De Silvestro-B. Meneghin in Italy because four sides getting ready for the U20 European Championship in Croatia were on display.

Slovenia, Serbia, Greece and hosts Italy played in a series of games.

The Slovenians won two of their three games, beating Serbia 73-66 and Italy 77-71, but they ended the event with a 69-64 defeat to Greece, despite entering the last quarter of that game with a two-point lead.

Slovenia will compete in Group D against Spain, Germany and hosts Croatia at the U20 European Championship, which will be staged from July 8-18.

Serbia, who will face Montenegro, Turkey and Lithuania, had won their first two games at the Torneo in Italy.

They defeated the Italians, 82-73, and then overcame Greece, 88-79.

That setback was the only one for Greece, the country that captured the gold medal at last year's U20 European Championship in Rhodes.

In addition to the win over Slovenia, the Greeks routed the Italians 84-59.

Italy lost  all three of their games.

In Croatia, Greece will play Latvia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic in Group A.

Italy are in Group C with the Netherlands, France and Russia.
