Godin Crucial For Cras

21 October 2010

The season has only just started and reigning Italian champions Cras Basket Taranto are already having ups and downs.

In year one of the post-Rebbeka Brunson era Cras did well enough without their leader of the past three seasons by winning the Supercoppa with a narrow triumph over arch rivals and fellow Euroleague outfit Schio.

Brunson, a EuroLeague Women All-Star, left the club for Ros Casares in the summer.

But over the weekend, Cras they failed to progress to the Final Four of the Coppa Italia when Liomatic Umbertide upset them, 64-56.

One player that will be pivotal for Cras this year in both Italy, and the EuroLeague Women, is Elodie Godin.

While the EuroBasket Women 2009 champion from France isn't spectacular, Godin is a power forward that is solid in the low post on both ends of the floor.

She works as hard as any player in Italy's top flight.

A product of INSEP (French National Institute of Sport and Physical Education), Godin is only 25 yet has plenty of EuroLeague experience.

She has played for Bourges, US Valenciennes, USK Prague and Taranto.

This is her third season with the Italian club.

"I'm enthusiastic and happy to have returned to the group," she said.

"This year we don't have Becky (Brunson), who is a great player that has given so much, but we have (Brooke) Smith in high spirits.

"I am convinced that with her, Cras can do well because we are a united group."

Smith, a 26-year-old center, joined Cras from Pool Comense.

She averaged almost 18 points per game for them last season.

Godin arrived in Italy fresh off her appearance at the FIBA World Championship for Women in the Czech Republic with Les Bleues.

In that very talented squad, she averaged 15.8 minutes per game.

"I would have wanted to have more playing time with the national team," Godin said.

"The only time that I did so was the 27 minutes I played against Australia.

"I got 11 points.

"But my focus is now on Taranto."

In the EuroLeague Women, Cras will play in Group A against Good Angels Kosice, Wisla Can-Pack Krakow, Pecs 2010, TTT Riga and USO Mondeville.

"I am here to play and be the usual Godin," she said.

"I will give my contribution to help Taranto continue to win."
