Brno Winning Streak Comes To An End

30 November 2005

Gambrinus Brno suffered the first defeat of their EuroLeague Women campaign on Wednesday after coming out second-best in a thrilling encounter with MKB Euroleasing Sopron.

With five successive victories behind them, Brno were firm favourites going into this Group B encounter but it was MKB who were celebrating at the end of the game after edging the contest 94-92.

Olexandra Gorbunova was the home side's heroine after successfully converting both of her free throws in the last two seconds after Delisha Milton had been penalised. That was tough on Milton who had been the game's standout player, scoring a remarkable 36 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

In a topsy-turvy match, MKB looked to have grabbed the upper hand when Andrea Karolyi's successful lay-up with 1:07 left in the third period to give her side a 70-63 lead.

But the visitors showed the kind of ability that had seen them sweep all aside in their previous five matches to turn the game on its head, scoring 14 of the next 16 points to establish a 77-72 advantage.

That might have seen the end of most sides but MKB battled back again and the lead regularly changed hands in the closing minutes before Gorbunova held her nerve to seal the match.

Gorbunova was only on the court for little over four minutes and contributed just four points in total, but her accuracy at the death proved decisive.

MKB, who started the clash much the better and led by nine points on more than one occasion in the opening two periods, were paced by point guard Nikki Teasley with 22 points but she received good support from forward-center Reka Cserny, who scored 22 points and hauled down seven rebounds.
