New Faces In New Spanish Places

07 October 2010

The frustration of the FIBA World Championship for Women is over for Erika de Souza of Brazil.

Hoping to challenge for a medal, Erika and the South American giants failed to even reach the Quarter-Finals.

To compound the misery, the Brazilians fell two places in the FIBA World Rankings for Women to sixth.

The best way to forget the disappointment is to find success elsewhere and that is likely to happen for Erika, who has already joined new club Halcon Avenida.

She will go up against her former team, Ros Casares, in the Spanish Supercup in Valencia on Friday.

"It will feel strange at the start because I spent four years there and now I return there with a different team," Erika said.

"But I'm sure as soon I start playing, everything will be okay."

Erika played for a great team at Ros last season, winning titles in Spain and also making it to the EuroLeague Women Final, which they lost to Spartak Moscow Region.

Avenida, who routinely play in front of big, high-energy crowds in Salamanca, should be a great experience for Erika.

"I am very happy that Perfumerias (Halcon Avenida) insisted on signing me so I am certain that I will enjoy myself a lot," Erika said.

"I've come here to give my best and win in all the tournaments we compete in.

"I am sure that we will win, starting on Friday."

Erika already knows some of her Avenida teammates.

"Many of the Perfumerias players are like family to me, like Sancho Lyttle and Anna Montanana," she said.

Montanana played with Erika the last two years in Valencia while Lyttle is an Atlanta Dream teammate in the WNBA.

"I also know Isa (Isabel) Sanchez well, and I've played against the rest," Erika said.

"I think we have a great group, with very good players.

9. Edwige Lawson-Wade (Spartak Moscow Region)

"I believe we are at least at the same level as Ros, so if people say they are to be feared, so are we."

Lawson Excited By Switch

One of the new faces at Ros Casares is Edwige Lawson-Wade, a former point guard at CSKA Moscow and Spartak Moscow Region.

"The Liga Femenina is one of the strongest leagues in Europe and Ros Casares are among the best clubs on the continent," the 31-year-old Lawson said.

"That's why I'm looking forward to playing here and getting involved in this project.

"I have experience in the EuroLeague Women and I will try to bring all the good things that I have learned throughout the years."

The French guard's last club in Europe was Israel's Ramla.
