Eric Elliot: FIBA Europe League Player of the Week

19 December 2003
Jon Ingram

The final MVP of the Week for the year 2003 goes to Polonia Warbud point guard Eric Elliot whose 27 points were key in his club’s upset victory over Group C leaders, Ural Great Perm. Although they are still one place out of the play-off places, the win gave the Polish club a realistic chance of qualifying to the next round of the FIBA Europe League.

Elliot is still known as the “Swedish God” in the country where he began his career. He joined Plannja Basket Lulea in 1992 and made an immediate impact, averaging 28 ppg in his first season (his shirt number was retired in Plannja when he left). In 1999 he was elected MVP of both the Swedish League and the NEBL Promotion Cup and earned the attention of the rest of Europe.

He consequently signed a contract to play for Lithuanian club Lietuvos Rytas, where he was named the top foreign player in his first season and was 2nd in the MVP race (to teammate Andrius Giedraitis).

Poland was Elliot’s next move and Gipsar Stal Ostrow for one season, before signing with Polonia at the start of this year. This is Elliot’s 10th season of European competition and his experience is proving invaluable to his new club. His 27 points gave Polonia hope for the play-offs, and if they are to make it to the next round, Elliot will no doubt have a big hand in the matter.
