Turkey tore Netherlands apart in the first quarter before winning at a canter, 60-45 in Udine on Sunday, to earn ninth spot at the U20 European Championship Women.
Turning Point: Klaziena Guijt's fast-break lay-up at the end of the first quarter had sent Netherlands into the first intermission back within 10 at 26-16 and with the confidence that they had a footing in the game. However, Turkey started the second on a 6-0 run and went on to outscore their opponents 18-5 in the period.
Game Hero: Tilbe Senyürek was instrumental for Turkey throughout the game but never more so than in the first period when she poured in 13 of her game-high 19 points and took complete control of the paint on both ends of the floor.
Stats Don't Lie: Unsurprisingly, with such a one-sided scoreline, Turkey were on top in most facets of the game. But their 11 assists, compared to Netherlands' single helper, go a long way to demonstrating Turkey's high level of offensive execution.
The Bottom Line: Turkey showed real character to win their final three games and finish in ninth place having lost all three of their second round games, after going unbeaten in the first round. Netherlands never really lived up to the high level of play they produced in their opening two games and will go home feeling they could have achieved more.
