Kate Kreslina kept her cool from the free-throw line to book Latvia's spot in the fifth-place play-off at the U20 European Championship Women after a dramatic 60-59 victory over Slovakia in Udine on Saturday.
Turning Point: Slovakia looked to be cruising to victory having opened up a nine-point lead in the final five minutes. But Ilze Jakobsone breathed new life into the game with five points in 40 seconds to set up a tense finale that put Kreslina on the line with the game tied at 59 with 4.3 seconds to play.
Game Hero: Kreslina missed the first of her two free throws with the game on the line and had to show real poise to knock down the second. That was her 16th point and rounded off an all-action display that included eight rebounds.
Stats Don't Lie: Slovakia were out-scored 8-1 in the final two-and-a-half minutes as they struggled to create good looks at the basket and forced up a series of ill-advised shots at the end of broken plays.
The Bottom Line: Latvia have secured at least a sixth-placed finish. A fine achievement for a side playing their first season back at Division A level having been promoted last year. For Slovakia, Angelika Slamová had a fine game but missed a vital free throw and her late game-winning attempt hit the front iron. They must now pick themselves up once more to play for seventh.
