France came back from an early deficit to defeat Italy 65-41 in the opening game of Group C at the U20 European Championship Women in Samsun on Thursday.
After Italy took an 18-10 lead at the start of the second quarter, France quickly came back. The deficit disappeared before the halftime, as the two teams went into the break tied at 24, before the French pulled away in the third quarter. Sara Chevaugeon and Claire Stievenard hit back-to-back three pointers to cap a 14-0 run that put them ahead 40-29, and there was no letting down all the way to the final buzzer.
French players compensated for their 23 turnovers by making six three-pointers on nine attempts, compared to Italy's two triples on 16 attempts.
Chevaugeon hit three-of-four from downtown, and Margaux Galliou was a perfect two-for-two, as each scored 11 points to lead France. Francesca Dotto was the only Italian player in double figures with 10 points.
