Farhiya Abdi and Amanda Zahui both stepped up for Sweden to help them secure a narrow 56-54 success over Poland at the U20 European Championship Women in Debrecen.

It was an excellent victory for Sweden who was in Division B last year, although last summer's bronze medallists Poland showed they could still possibly be a team to watch out for - despite being edged out in this exciting contest.

WNBA draftee Abdi racked up 21 points while Zahui showed her prowess under the hoop with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.

However in reality, neither team found any kind of offensive rhythm and especially from the perimeter with the respective defences were very much on top.

Poland enjoyed the brighter opening, manoeuvering their way into a healthy 26-17 lead early in the second quarter but an 11-4 burst of scoring heading into the break helped Sweden get back to within a point heading into the second half.

The Poles still led by a point with just over two minutes of the contest remaining at 51-50, after a lay-up by Martyna Stelmach.

But, just when it mattered most, Sweden made the big plays which handed them the victory in the dying moments.

Poland will no doubt be cursing shooting only six foul shots in the game compared to 23 for the winning team.
