|Alessandra Tava hurt Latvia with her 29 points in Italy's win to secure the Quarter-Finals|
Italy made certain of their quarter-final berth and eliminated Latvia at the U20 European Championship Women with a 70-61 win.
After trailing in the first quarter, the Italians used a big second period to take control of the game with 14-3 run turning a 22-19 edge into a commanding 36-23 lead on Federica Nannucci's three-pointer with 3:14 left in the half.
Latvia had no plans just to fade away, however, and they would come back late on to put a scare into the Italians.
Ilze Gotfrida's jump-shot started an 11-4 fourth-quarter run that saw them close the gap to three, 62-59, on a three-pointer from Liga Surkusa with 4:25 remaining.
But Alessandra Tava delivered a pair of daggers to Latvian hearts as she nailed back-to-back three-pointers to send Italy clear once more heading into the final moments.
Those were part of a huge 29-point haul for Tava, who made five-of-seven from three-point range in the game.
Federica Tognalini and Valeria De Pretto also scored in double figures for Italy with 12 points each.
Anete Kirsteine led Latvia with 17 points while Sabine Niedola had 14 and Kristine Vitola 13 and 11 rebounds.
