|Helena Sverrisdottir is expected to be the linchpin of the Icelandic team|
Ivar Asgrimsson, the newly appointed head coach of Iceland´s senior women‘s team, has selected the 12 players that will represent their country this summer at the European Championship of the Small Countries Women.
Iceland is preparing for the championship which will take place in St. Polten, Austria in July. Prior to travelling to the alpine nation, the team will play two friendly games against Denmark at home. The first one will be in Hafnarfjordur on 9 July and the second will be played in Stykkisholmur a day later.
Asgrimsson, who previously led the team from 2004-2005 and had a record of 11-9, and his assistant coach, Margret Sturlaugsdottir, have selected two newcomers to the team in center Marin Laufey Davidsdottir and guard Margret Rosa Halfdanardottir.
The team leader and captain is former EuroLeague Women Final Eight participant, point guard Helena Sverrisdottir, who last season appeared in EuroCup Women for Hungarian club DVTK Miskolc. She will be joined in the backcourt by Gunnhildur Gunnarsdottir, Palina Gunnlaugsdottir and Hildur Sigurdardottir, who is coming off a fantastic season in which she was named the Iceland finals MVP.
The frontcourt has a wealth of experience in the likes of veterans Bryndis Gudmundsdottir, Maria Ben Erlingsdottir, Kristrun Sigurjonsdottir and Sigrun Sjofn Amundadottir who will all provide leadership for the exciting up-and-coming players such as Hildur Bjorg Kjartansdottir and Ragna Margret Brynjarsdottir.
