|Veteran Sandis Valters had the hot hand for Ventspils, nailing six three-pointers|
BK Ventspils improved to 1-1 in Group K of the EuroChallenge Last 16 with a comfortable 69-59 home victory over SASP JDA Dijon Basket.
Sandis Valters drained six three-pointers in scoring 21 points while Lorenzo Williams had 14 points and Ronalds Zakis added 13.
Dijon dropped to 0-2 in the group as Ferdinand Prenom was the only player to score in double digits with 10 points.
Ventspils moved the ball excellently in the early going as six different players scored in opening an 18-5 lead.
The advantage was 27-15 after one quarter.
A Valters triple re-established the 13-point cushion at 39-26 before Dijon closed to within 39-32.
At halftime the hosts' lead was 43-34.
Dijon again trimmed the gap to seven points at 43-36 before Valters nailed two long balls and the lead grew to 57-41. Ventspils led 59-47 after 30 minutes.
The guests tried to get back into the game but could not mount any sort of comeback, getting the lead down to 10 points at 65-55 with two minutes to play.
Dijon Head Coach Jean-Louis Borg
"First, I want to say that we knew that Ventspils is a very good team. We saw the video of their game against Gaziantep. Our team made the biggest mistakes in the first quarter. We did not manage to control some guys on the Ventspils team and they scored too much, for example, Janis Timma and Ronalds Zakis. We knew that Sandis Valters from Ventspils is good at three-point shots and we allowed him to score too much, we could not control him today."
Dijon Player Andre Harris
"We started bad in defence in the beginning. It is a different kind of game when we play as a team in a place like this, because we are a physical team in defence. In the first quarter we got down by 27 points and that is not how we play, that was the beginning of our loss."
Ventspils Head Coach Roberts Stelmahers
"I am happy that we won this home game; however as a coach I know that we can do even better. The first quarter was the most effective, especially if we look at the three-point shots. We showed that despite the loss against Gaziantep, we are good and we can play at a good level. This is not an easy group for us and every team is strong and should be respected."
Ventspils Player Lorenzo Williams
"We had a good defence today, good communication between team-mates. We were active with our legs and hands. I think the most important thing was that we played good team defence."
