Leiden Win Not Enough For Third

Leiden fell one point shy of the 15-point victory they needed to pip Kataja Basket to third place in Group G of the EuroChallenge.

Although both teams had already been eliminated, the prospect of third clearly mattered to Leiden, who were electric in the first and third quarters but could not hang on as Kataja came back at them late on to make it 72-58 at the finish.

Leiden all but blew Kataja away in the opening quarter, outscoring the visitors 19-3 in a show of one-way traffic.

Kataja began to find some rhythm but nevertheless the lead was 33-15 when Joshua Duinker threw down Whit Holcomb-Faye's alley-oop pass midway through the second period.

Kataja fought back to get within 11, 39-28, at half-time, but that seemed irrelevant once Leiden got rolling again in the third quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points to lead 60-32 when Worthy De Jong made a lay-up with 2:22 to go in the period.

It seemed Leiden were destined for third place but Kataja were not done yet as a late rally saved their spot.

With 1:40 remaining Michael Morrison converted Teemu Rannikko's alley-oop pass before Antti Kanervo's three-pointer cut the gap to 14 with 59 seconds left, and that is how it stayed.

Duinker led Leiden with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Michael Schachtner added 16 and De Jong 15.

Brian Greene had 16 points with 11 rebounds and Kanervo added 15 for Kataja, with Morrison collecting 12 points and 11 boards.
