GAME REPORT

Free Throws Lift Samokov To Win

5. Sean Barnette (Rilski Sportist)
Sean Barnette led the charge for Rilski Sportist with 17 points

Evan Ravenel and Zlatin Georgiev made key free throws at the death as Rilski Sportist edged out BC Mures 70-68 for their first win in EuroChallenge Group H.

Rilski Sportist had squandered a lead which reached 12 points just before half-time to allow Mures to tie it with 41 seconds left, but Mures could not score again as the hosts salted the game away from the line.

Sean Barnette led them to victory with 17 points while Yordan Bozov added 15.

Mures had started strongly, taking a 15-9 lead when Vaidotas Peciukas sank a jump shot with 2:13 to go in the first quarter.

But Rilski Sportist battled back and then broke the game open with an 11-0 second quarter run which gave them a 35-23 edge when Ravenel sank the second of back-to-back jumpers.

Mures had it all to do but they got back within touching distance when a 8-0 run made it 51-48 on Tyrone Mitchell's three-pointer.

They kept scrapping and pulled level at 68-68 when Denham Brown grabbed the rebound from Ivan Jelenic's missed three and put it up inside the final minute.

But after Ravenel split a pair of free throws, Peciukas missed a three nine seconds from time, and Georgiev went to the line.

He made the first - his only point in 30 minutes of action - and then missed the second for Ravenel to grab the rebound and end the contest.

Ivan Ivanovic finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Mures, with Jelenic adding 11.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Rilski Sportist Samokov vs. BC Mures

BC Mures Head Coach Srecko Sekulovic:
"In the first quarter we had a chance to lead Rilski by more as they played a little bit under pressure. I watched their games against Szolnok and Minsk and in the first quarter they played very well. This time they still played well but worse than usually. Our disaster, however, was the second quarter when we let them make a difference and Rilski is not a bad team. We had a last shot with [Vaidotas] Peciukas who is a very good three-point shooter but he missed and it was the end. The biggest problem for us is the absence of Goran Martinic who is still injured and we miss him a lot. We have two games at home and we have a chance to qualify; we want to grab it."

BC Mures Player Teodor Jucan:
"We started bad and after that our game improved a little bit but in the second quarter they killed us. Then we came back in the game, we started to score but we missed the last shot for the win. We need to win both games at home now and maybe we'll have a chance to qualify."

Rilski Sportist Head Coach Rosen Barchovski:
"This is a historical win for Samokov - the first in Europe and it has to be noticed. It was very difficult; there was a lot of pressure on us. We had to win and this reflected on us. If we had continued to play defence like we did in the first half, our fast break would have been better in second and the game would have become easier for us. In any case we won it."

Rilski Sportist Player Yordan Bozov:
"For us it was important to win because we came off two losses in the national league and two losses in the EuroChallenge. It was a psychological win. I am happy that we still have a chance to advance to the second round in the EuroChallenge. That is our goal. We played a good first half, but in the second half we made lot of mistakes and that allowed Mures to catch up."
