GAME REPORT

Bears Bring Up Century In Big Win

9. Kenneth Barker (Bakken Bears Aarhus)
Kenneth Barker led the way for the Bakken Bearswith 20 points and 8 assists

Bakken Bears Aarhus collected their second win in Group G of EuroChallenge as they saw off Kataja Basket in a 101-90 shoot-out.

The Bears took control with an 11-0 run in the first quarter and were rarely troubled again thereafter with a late Kataja rally having insufficient legs to threaten the lead.

Thomas Laerke and Kenneth Barker poured in 20 points each, Barker adding eight assists, to lead six Bears scoring in double figures, with Brandon Penn adding 12 rebounds to his 14 points.

After Kataja enjoyed a fleeting taste of the lead at the start of the night, the Bears swiftly took control and when Nicolai Iversen made a lay-up to cap a 9-0 burst, they were up 27-11 late in the first quarter.

Penn's lay-up made it 37-20 early in the second quarter - the biggest bulge of the night - before Kataja began to make at least some headway, cutting it to 48-40 with seven unanswered points just before half-time.

They did enough to keep the Bears honest in the second half, but after the hosts enjoyed a 9-0 burst that bridged the third and fourth quarters - capped by Chris Christoffersen's dunk, any hopes they had of getting back into the game had gone.

That did not stop them trying as a late three from Juho Lehtoranta, followed by a jump shot from Petri Virtanen, got them back within single figures, but there was no stopping the Bears, who moved into triple figures when Penn sank a three-pointer at the death.

Renaldo Major led Kataja with 21 points and nine rebounds while Michael Morrison had 17 with 11 boards.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Bakken Bears vs. Kataja Basket

Kataja Basket Player Petri Virtanen
"We weren't ready at the beginning of the game, and that made us trail right from the start. We have to put in a greater effort in the next games if we want a successful campaign in the EuroChallenge."

Kataja Basket Head Coach Jukka Toijala
"We were lucky not to be trailing by more at half time than we were. Bakken Bears were all over us, and we struggled a lot in the beginning of the game - there was always a player in our face, when we had the ball."

Bakken Bears Player Kenneth Barker
"It was an intense game. When we played in Holland last week, we were surprised by how fast and strong the Dutchmen came out to the game and we wanted to change that today. We started out strong and got a great payoff right from the beginning."

Bakken Bears Head Coach Ville Tuominen
"As it has been the case in most of our games this season, we started the game with a high pressure. The guys showed great confidence and I think that it played a major role in our victory today. We believed in the game plan and in the shots we took."
