GAME REPORT

Kings Begin Positively At Home

9. Toni Bizaca (Södertälje Kings)
Toni Bizaca gave the Södertälje Kings the perfect start to their new EuroChallenge campaign, recording 21 points

BC Zepter Vienna have failed to topple the Kings of Sodertalje in their first European outing, with the Swedes starting their 2013/14 EuroChallenge campaign with an 82-73 win.

Travelling to Sweden for their EuroChallenge debut, Vienna showed no signs of early nerves, keeping up with their hosts throughout the opening frame before a Toni Bizaca three on the buzzer gave the Kings a seven-point, 23-16 lead.

The Kings' lead disintegrated as rapidly as it had arrived in the second frame as Nenad Sulovic came up with 11 points in six minutes to have Vienna trailing by two before providing the assist on a Arnas Labuckas three to give the guests a one-point lead.

The Kings then struggled to shake off their visitors who, with just over three minutes remaining in the penultimate period, had the scores tied at 49.

However, it was at that point that Mantas Griskenas took the Kings on their decisive run, leading them on a 10-0 spurt which put them ahead 59-49 with 17 seconds to play in the third.

Vienna, who despite staying round in the final frame, could never completely recover from their third quarter defensive lapse, eventually conceding the nine-point win.

Croatian Bizaca was the best of the Kings, ending with 21 points. Challenging his spot atop the throne with 16 points was John Roberson - one point more than Martin Pahlmblad, whilst Griskenas completed an all-round performance with 14 points and eight boards.

The best in a losing effort came from Nikola Pavlicevic who led all scoring with 25 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Sodertalje Kings vs. BC Zepter Vienna

BC Zepter Vienna Player Florian Trmel:
"As it was our first EuroChallenge game ever, we were not concentrated enough, and we should have played better defence and more organized. We will try to do that when we meet again in Vienna."

BC Zepter Vienna Head Coach Darko Russo:
"We had two problems. One was that we were not able to scout our opponents before this game. Kings played better than we expected and we were surprised that they changed defence so many times. Our other problem was that many of our players are inexperienced at this level and did not play as relaxed as they should have."

Södertälje Kings Player Mike Joseph:
"We got off to a bad start in the game. Vienna was a good adversary, but as we managed to get our defence in order, I think we put them under some stress and were happy to win the game."

Södertälje Kings Head Coach, Vedran Bosnic:
"It was not an easy game, but an important win for us. I am happy about our attitude, defence and that we managed to take away many of Vienna's offensive options, but not so pleased with our performance in the second quarter, when they killed us in the paint, and with our poor rebounding."
