|Oradea are still in with a chance to progress to the Second Round after their home win against Paks|
CSM Oradea had four players score 17 points or more in collecting a crucial 90-74 home victory over Atomerömü Paks in Group B of the EuroChallenge.
Radovan Markovic led the way with 20 points while Titus Nicoara had 19 points and 11 rebounds and Sean Denison added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Oradea, who improved to 2-2 in the group. Vujadin Subotic chipped in 17 points in the win.
Rodney McGruder poured in 27 points for Atomerömü, who dropped to 1-3 with the defeat. Janos Eilingsfeld added 18 points in the losing effort.
After Oradea jumped ahead 11-2, Atomerömü fought their way back into the game and tied it at 17-17. The hosts were up 21-17 after one quarter.
Oradea pushed the lead to 27-19 but Atomerömü answered with an 11-3 run to knot it again at 30-30. William Franklin and Nicoara combined for 11 points in Oradea's 15-2 surge and led 45-34 at halftime.
An 11-2 Oradea run made it 56-36 and the hosts were up 68-48 after three quarters.
Atomerömü started the fourth quarter with a 14-4 run and then Gergely Körtélyesi and Deonta Vaugh nailed three-balls to cut the deficit to 76-70 with four minutes left. But Oradea used a 10-2 to finish off the game.
Branislav Dzunic, Atomeromu SE Paks coach
"I think it was a good game for the fans. I also want to thank our own fans for coming to the game. We tried to play with energy and to run more, but the home team was really better in every aspect of the game. Oradea was better in rebounding and shooting percentage. Also Radovan Markovic made some incredible shots. We didn't play our best game, but we gave 100 percent and our maximum energy. We played without our starter at power forward position, but one player cannot change the game by himself."
Rodney McGruder, Atomeromu SE Paks player
"We made a lot of mistakes at the defensive end. It was a hard game, we competed, but it wasn't enough. [Radovan] Markovic made some open shots but also some contested ones. In the previous game he also hit some big shots so we knew what to expect from him. Still, we couldn't stop him."
Cristian Achim, CSM Oradea coach
"It was very important not to be dominated at rebounding. Also, the fact that we scored 90 points it is a huge accomplishment, because Atomeromu are very good in defense. I am very happy we won this game because the Hungarian team is really tough to beat. They are well coached and have good principles. It is no coincidence they are top of the table in the Hungarian league. For us it is a big victory. I don't know how important it is to qualify to the next round of the competition, but considering the value of Paks it is a big win for our team. The absence of [Zsolt] Szabo was important because it changed our game plan, but after all it is a team game. On the other hand the player that replaced him tonight played surprisingly well. I am also happy for our crowd. It was a great spectacle."
Sean Denison, CSM Oradea player
"I think we played great tonight. The coach told us that this game will be won if we fight. Our intensity was very good. We did that. They made some runs but we really played very good in this game. The fact they played without their starter at position 4 changed our approach to the game."
