GAME REPORT

Bears Stun Ekaterinburg

8. Thomas Laerke (Bakken Bears Aarhus)
Youngster Thomas Laerke recorded 21 points for the Bakken Bears

Bakken Bears Aarhus upset the form book to record their first win in the Last 16 of the EuroChallenge and deny Ural Ekaterinburg the chance to book a quarter-final ticket on the night.

A huge third quarter guided the Bears to a 92-84 win as Kenneth Barker poured in 22 points and Thomas Laerke 21.

The Bears, who are already enjoying the longest EuroChallenge campaign in their history, outscored Ekaterinburg 25-10 in the third period, and a 9-0 run that stretched into the fourth quarter put them 68-52 up.

The Russians, knowing a win would send them through after Minsk won earlier in the day, did their best to rally, but the Bears kept finding an answer.

When Lance Harris made a three-point play from the line, Ekaterinburg had got it back to 76-70, but Afamefuna Okolie replied with a put-back from Barker's miss to pad the lead.

Fedor Kliuchnikov then nailed a three to make it a five-point game but after a time-out the Bears went on a critical 6-0 spurt to lead 84-73 on Chris Christofferson's dunk with the clock down to 1:53.

Anton Glazunov replied with another three only for Brandon Penn to reel off another six points, his dunk bookended by pairs of free throws, that effectively put the game out of sight for Ekaterinburg.

Penn finished with 15 points while Christofferson had 11 and Okolie 10.

Harris poured in 20 for Ekaterinburg with Aaron McGhee collecting 18 with 10 rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Bakken Bears Aarhus vs. Ural Ekaterinburg

Bakken Bears Head Coach Ville Tuominen
"I felt we had the game under control. In the first half we deviated from our plan and fell asleep a little bit, and a team as good as Ural Ekaterinburg makes you pay for that. In the entire third quarter we stuck to our concept and played good defensively. It always starts with our defence, and what we showed today was really good. Ural Ekaterinburg was unbeaten for eight straight games in the EuroChallenge before today, so this was a remarkable result for us."

Bakken Bears Player Chris Christoffersen
"It was great for us to be able to show our home crowd that we are able to beat a team as strong as Ural Ekaterinburg. When we played against them in Russia we played well and had faith that we could win, but we had some bad turnovers and that ruined it for us. Today we were frustrated to be behind at halftime, because we knew we could play better, and I am glad we proved we had it in us."

Ural Ekaterinburg Head Coach Oleg Okulov
"We have played a lot of games away lately, and we were obviously tired today. That tiredness led to a lot of mistakes, and that was why we lost. Also Bakken Bears had a lot of support from their home crowd and they played a very good game today."

Ural Ekaterinburg Player Alexander Korchagin
"They played very well defensively today. We had seen videos before the game and tried to prepare for this kind of aggressive defence that we do not usually meet in the Russian league. But it wasn't enough - we had a lot of turnovers today, and that is why we lost."
