| Aaron Mc Ghee had 13 points as Ural Ekaterinburg got off the mark in Group F|
A late rally fell short as Tofas SC Bursa went down 74-70 to Ural Ekaterinburg in Group F of the EuroChallenge.
Ekaterinburg led by as many as 16 early in the fourth quarter and although Tofas capped a late run with seven straight points to get within four with 56 seconds left, they could not score again as the hosts hung on.
Lance Harris led Ekaterinburg with 19 points while Aaron McGhee added 13, with the 22 points and 11 rebounds amassed by Marcus Denmon in vain for Tofas.
The first half was a close battle with 13 lead changes and eight ties but, having nosed in front just before half-time, Ekaterinburg made their move at the start of the third period.
Three-pointers from Dmitrii Nikolaev and Anton Glazunov helped them open up a 45-36 lead, and another three from Baranov with 1:48 left in the third made it 56-44.
When Harris followed another Baranov three with a put-back from McGhee's miss early in the fourth period the lead was 64-48.
With time running down, Tofas launched their comeback attempt when Rok Stipcevic sank a three-pointer with 3:31 left, cutting the gap to 11 and sparking a 12-2 run.
Another three from Denmon made it 74-68 with 1:28 to go and after Dmitrii Arteshin missed from long range for Ekaterinburg, Denmon added two more from the free throw line with 56 ticks left.
An Ekaterinburg turnover gave them the chance to cut the lead further, but Denmon was off-target with a three-pointer and Ekateriburg saw the game out safely.
The win gets Ekaterinburg off the mark in Group F following their narrow loss to KRKA Novo Mesto last time out while Tofas drop back to 1-1.
Ural Ekaterinburg Head Coach Oleg Okulov
"The game was very interesting for spectators, and useful for our team. Tofas is a strong and experienced team, we were preparing for the game and we fulfilled almost everything we planned. It was more difficult for our opponents because on 10 November they were playing at home, while our previous game was played on 8 November. The Turkish team didn't expect such opposition. At the end of the game they reduced difference from 14 to 4 points. All the games they in their country are equally tough, so they are able to resist."
Ural Ekaterinburg Player Oleg Baranov
"Our players were ready for the game and wanted to rehabilitate after our failure in Slovenia. We followed our coach's instructions, and played as a team."
Tofas SC Bursa Player Chinemelu Elonu
"In our one-on-one defence with Aaron Mc Ghee we were at a similar level, my teammates were giving good passes too, that's why I scored 23 points."
Tofas SC Bursa Head Coach of Ahmet Caki
"First of all I want to congratulate Ural on their win. We were ready for a struggle when coming here. We didn't succeed on both offence and defence. It is always complicated to play on the road. In the third quarter we allowed Ural to lead, and they made a 14-point difference, which was hard to reduce. We did our best in the last ten [minutes], but lost by four points. Ural have very passionate fans, the atmosphere is great."
