2013 EuroChallenge Second Round participants, Tofas SC Bursa, have enjoyed a comfortable start to their 2013/14 campaign, defeating Fortress Jaszberenyi 86-72 at home on Tuesday evening.
American Nikolas Raivio provided the first three points of the night for the visiting Hungarians, but when Jure Balazic sunk his second three-pointer of the night in the seventh minute of play, the Turkish hosts were up by four and did not look like relinquishing the lead again.
An inability to neutralise Tofas shooting guard Marcus Denmon in the paint in the second quarter provided plenty of food for thought for Jaszberenyi at the half, as the American complemented eight points in the paint with a big three, finishing the frame with 11 points to have his side in command 48-31 at the change of ends.
The second half provided a little more relief for the visitors, who tied the penultimate frame 18-18, before coming out on top 23-20 over the last 10 minutes. However, their improved scoring was never a reason for concern for Tofas.
Denmon completed proceedings with 27 points as Serhat Cetin and Balazic followed suit with 13 points each whilst Chinemelu Elonu rounded out the home town players in double figures with 11 points alongside eight rebounds.
Rastko Dramicanin tallied a team-high 18 points in defeat.
Tofas Head Coach Ahmet Caki:
"We played good, especially in the first half. We made a lot of mistakes in the third quarter. Our team quality is better than our opponent but they hustled good. Because of that we respect Fortress Jeszberenyi."
Tofas Player Samet Geyik:
"Before this game we wanted to begin EuroChallenge well. We are happy to win this game. Our goal is the EuroChallenge Final Four. We have a lot of games in November, beginning with that game. I hope we will succeed in our next games. I congratulate our opponents because of their hustle."
Fortress Jaszberenyi Head Coach Sandor Foldi:
"The Tofas team has more quality than ours. They played good. They have a lot of experience in these competitions. We respect and learn things from our opponents."
Tofas Player Milos Markovic:
"We congratulate Tofas. We did our best but we couldn't succeed. They played well, especially in the first half. We will try to our best in the second game."
