Violets Go Top By Relegating Giants

28 April 2010

BG Göttingen are white hot heading into the EuroChallenge Final Four they will host this weekend.

The Violets, in the space of five days, have beaten Eisbären Bremerhaven, Eurocup finalists Alba Berlin and Giants Düsseldorf to climb into first place in the Beko Basketball Bundesliga.

John Patrick's side is in first place with 58 points, though second-top EWE Baskets Oldenburg also have 58 and a game in hand.

Giants Düsseldorf, who were relegated with Tuesday's loss, could very easily have won against the Violets.

Leading 68-64 with 2:00 remaining following baskets by Koko Archibong and Eric Taylor, the home side didn't slam the door shut.

First Göttingen's Michael Meeks made two free-throws and then John Little to knot the game at 68-68 with 1:33 to go.

After misses by Gordon Geib and Marc Antonio Carter for the home side, Göttingen's sensational rookie Taylor Rochestie drove in for a lay-up just 37 seconds from the end and scored to put the visitors in front to stay.

Giants did have their chances at the end, but Geib missed from long range with 19 seconds to go and then Archibong was off target from behind the arc with three seconds remaining.

The hosts fouled Chris Oliver, who made two free-throws before Carter hit a three-ball at the death for Düsseldorf.

It was too little, too late for Giants.

"I am very sorry to the project and for all the people involved here," Giants boss Hansi Gnad, an assistant coach with Germany's national team, said.

"This is for all of us a very bitter pill.

"I personally have never been in such a situation."
