Azovmash Comeback Takes Down DKV Joventut

17 January 2006

Azovmash staged a superb late fightback to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against DKV Joventut Badalona on Tuesday.

Both teams entered the contest with two wins from their three Group L clashes but it looked as though it would be visitors DKV who would walk off with the spoils.

They built a 75-67 lead on the back of Andy Betts' jump shot with 4:42 left in the final quarter.

But Azovmash blitzed their opponents in the closing stages, scoring 16 unanswered points to take the game 83-75.

"I am greatful that there was the last quarter and we could win," said Azovmash head coach Rimas Girskis.

Oleksandr Skutyelnik started the fightback with a three-pointer before a dunk from Serhiy Lishchuk got the Ukrainian giants within three points of DKV with just over three minutes remaining.

Khalid El-Amin then took centre-stage, making a lay-up before sinking a shot from behind the arc to give Azovmash their first lead since midway through the third period.

Unlike earlier in the match when they surrendered a 12-point lead at half-time, Azovmash made sure they did not waste their advantage a second time and three successful free throws from Arnas Kazlauskas gave them some breathing space before  Skutyelnik and Lishchuk added to their tallies in the final seconds to wrap up the win.

American guard El-Amin led all scorers with a 19-point haul while he also handed out three assists.

"We played badly," said DKV Joventut head coach Alejandro Garcia.

"We had three difficult  games in a row, so we were tired. Now we have to win our home games in order to keep our chances for advancing to the next round."

Miroslav Beric weighed in with 14 points for the victors and Lishchuk contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

For Spanish outfit Joventut, Alex Mumbru poured in 16 points while Lubos Barton scored 15 points and hauled down 12 rebounds.
