There were two reasons why the Turkish team needed to play well. Firstly, 29th October is a national holiday in Turkey, and secondly, Turk Telekom has lost its last two games and it was therefore time to win again. About 1000 Turkish people who live and work in Kazan came to the Basketball arena to support their team.
Turk Telekom started the game very actively, with very tough defensive play. They were strong under the basket and Kazan had to attack from long distance. The score was equal after six minutes were played (11:11). Then UNICS took the lead, helped a little by the Turkish players’ mistakes. Stombergas played very well, and when the score reached 27:20 he already had 11 points.
During the second period UNICS showed good defensive work, allowing just 5 points, and in offense they played attractive fast-break-basketball. The result at halftime: 52:25 in favour of UNICS - the winner seemed to be clear.
At the beginning of the third period the gap reached 34 points, the score 59:25. Although the Turkish team decreased the gap by 8 points – 59:33, it couldn’t change the situation.
Ercument Sunter, Turk Telekom Head Coach:
"Before the game it was obvious that Kazan was stronger. My players did not make much effort. Maybe there was a reason, some of them were injured not so long ago. I hope the team will play better in the future."
Stanislav Eremin, UNICS Head Coach:
"At the beginning we did not play actively. Khryapa’s appearance made the game better. I was more satisfied with the defense than with the offense of my players."
