Germany Cruise Past Israel

Jan Wimberg was prominent for Germany in their opening day victory

Five players scored in double figures including two double-doubles as Germany eased past Israel on the first day of action at the U18 European Championship Division B while Austria beat Georgia in the final seconds.

Andreas Obst scored 16 points, Mahir Agva (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Niklas Kiel (12,10) both had double-doubles while Jan Niklas Wimberg added 13 points and nine rebounds as Germany knocked off Israel 81-45 in Group D.

Israel got 14 points from Daniel Danino.
Also in Group D, Renato Poljak nailed a three-pointer with four seconds left as Austria beat Georgia 57-54. Lennart Burgermeister scored 15 points for the Austrians, who also got eight points, 14 rebounds and five assists from Marvin Ogunsipe.
In the other game in the group, Jón Axel Gudmundsson collected 21 points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals as Iceland beat Estonia 72-45.

Hosts Bulgaria opened their Group A campaign with a 74-45 win over Scotland as Rumen Vasiliev scored 17 points and Alexander Iliev had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Sean Flood scored 19 points as Ireland beat Denmark 66-61 in their comeback to the U18 level for the first time since 2008. The victory snapped an 11-game U18 losing streak dating back to 2007.

Oleksandr Kobets poured in 22 points and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk added 19 as Ukraine knocked off Portugal 82-61 in the other Group A contest.

Group B is currently topped by Luxembourg, who beat Netherlands 75-58 thanks to 16 points each from Vic Heuschling and Oliver Vujakovic.

Erik Johansson had 18 points and Mattias Markusson collected 15 points and 11 rebounds as Sweden saw off Hungary 62-50.

The other team in Group B is Romania, who were idle on the first day.

In Group C, Nejc Zupan poured in 18 points as Slovenia beat F.Y.R. of Macedonia 77-49 while Lauri Markkanen scored 18 points in Finland's 85-64 victory against Norway.

Idle in Group C was Switzerland.
