Serbia picked up a crucial victory in a very tight Second Round Group F of the U18 European Championship by getting past Greece 74-69.
Stefan Lazarevic scored 16 points to pace four players in double figures including Stefan Peno with 12, Ilija Dokovic with 11 and Vasilije Vucetic with 10 points.
Konstantinos Mitoglou led Greece with 26 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks while Vasileios Charalampopoulos had 14 points. Dimitrios Stamatis was held to just six points.
Turning point: Greece were leading 64-60 with 4:20 minutes left when Serbia coach Aleksandar Bucan brought Peno back into the game and the point guard did what he does - makes plays. Down 66-62 with 2:37 to play, he drained a three-ball, grabbed the following defensive rebound and made a long jumper. After a Greece timeout, Peno swiped the ball and fed Ilija Dokovic for a fast-break layup and a 69-66 Serbia lead. Peno finished off the game by hitting five of six free throws in the final 13 seconds.
Game Hero: While he has a flair for the dramatic, Peno came up clutch down the stretch with 10 points in the final 2:22 minutes. He finished with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block.
Stats Don't Lie: Serbia shot 33 per cent from three-point range compared to 21 per cent for Greece and had nine fast break points to just four for Greece.
