Turkey used a strong second-half performance to cruise past Croatia 84-76 in Group D of the U18 European Championship in Liepaja on Friday night.
Turkey leaned on the experience of Kenan Sipahi to pull out of a close first half. The point guard was instrumental in Turkey overturning a two-point halftime deficit and score eight straight points at the beginning of the third quarter.
Croatia came to within five points with under four minutes remaining in the game, but the Turkish refused to relinquish the lead, eventually running out eight-point winners.
Sipahi added seven rebounds and six assists to go along with 21 points. Metecan Birsen contributed 13 points and four blocked shots.
Power forward Tomislav Gabric helped Croatia to a healthy start with a 10-point opening quarter effort, but managed just four points thereafter. Domagoj Bosnjak led Croatia with 19 points and seven rebounds in 31 minutes.
