Estudiantes center Antonio Bueno has been released by Spain coach Mario Pesquera as he trims his squad ahead of next month's EuroBasket.
Pesquera can only take 12 players with him to Serbia & Montenegro and has decided to release Bueno even before Spain begin their warm-up games.
"It wouldn't be honourable to release him in three days time when I have already made the decision," said Pesquera.
"Decisions like this are always painful, but we have to drop players to complete the squad for Belgrade.
"Antonio is 10 out of 10 as a player and I hope to count on him in the future. I believe in him and that is proved by the fact I called on him in the first place."
It is the second time Bueno has suffered the disappointment of not making a final squad as the same happened to him a year ago when Spain were preparing for the Olympic Games.
"At the moment I am looking forward to starting a new stage of my career at Estudiantes," said Bueno, who last season was with Real Madrid.
