13 November 2003

Euras Ekaterinburg and BC Neptunas provided 3,000 Russian fans with an absolute thriller in overtime tonight in the FIBA Europe Cup Men.

Euras survived an almighty comeback attempt from the Lithuanian side and some clutch free throw shooting from captain Alexey Lobadov saved the game for the home team.

It never seemed that overtime would be necessary as Euras took control of the game early with a 7:0 run. Euras continued in that vein throughout the first half and some hot 3-point shooting saw them increase the lead to up to 19 points, 40:21.

The advantage lulled Euras into relaxing and Neptunas seized the opportunity to get back inot the game. They scored 32 points in the 3rd period alone, more than their total for the entire first half, and a 3-pointer from Petras Salvis cut the Euras’ lead to 3, 60:57.

With momentum firmly on their side and Lobanov, Andrei Penkine and Niska Tarle all in foul trouble Euras, Neptunas took the lead.

Euras captain Lobanov celebrates victory
With the score at 84:86 and time winding down, Neptunas had a chance to seal the victory. Unfortunately for them, center Gintaras Stulga missed 2 free throws and with 3 seconds left, Lobanov found himself at the line. He calmly made both free throws to take the game into overtime.

Both teams remained neck and neck into overtime and as in regulation, free throws would decide the outcome.

The score was 93:95 when Oleg Kiselev was fouled and given a chance to tie the game at the line. He nailed the first but missed the second. Luckily for him center Dmitry Cheremnykh was on hand to clean up the mess. He grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in, giving his side a slender 96:95 victory.
