|Ornella Bankole recorded her third double-double of the tournament|
Despite a low-scoring fourth quarter, France held on to take a 46-44 Group F victory over the Netherlands in the U16 European Championship Women.
Laura Westerik scored 12 points during a 16-5 run in the first half which put the Netherlands ahead. France held on, and Ornella Bankole's lay-up in the final minute of the second quarter moved her team within five points.
The second half began with the French team active on defense, forcing turnovers and holding the Netherlands to just six points in the third period. Bankole's three-point play capped a great quarter and extended the French lead to seven points.
The Dutch defense tried to spur a fourth-quarter comeback, and Christy Buderman's lay-up reduced the deficit to two points in the final minute. But Janis Ndiba's final shot fell short as France prevailed.
Bankole ended with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Ludivine Marie added 13 points for France, who will play Spain in the quarter-finals.
Westerik finished with 21 points and Ndiba had another great game on the boards with 16 rebounds for the Netherlands, who will now battle to retain Division A status in the classification games.
