Italy grabbed a surprise victory over defending champions Spain, 67-48.
The Italian team started strong from the beginning, taking the lead over a Spanish team with a very low shooting percentage.
As a reaction was expected from the Spanish side, it was Italy who stayed on track to enter half time with a five points lead (23-28).
Spain changed for better after the break, putting themselves on the lead with five minutes playedin the third quarter.
But it was for short note, as Italy recovered the command and reached the end of the quarter on the lead again.
The Spanish team tried hard to change things, but Italy was simply stronger today.
As a sign of it, Italy head coach Roberto Riccardi called his two best scorers to the bench with two minutes still to play.
Martina Kacerik (16 points), Marzia Tagliamento (15 points) and Cecilia Zandalasini (14 points) made almost as many points as the whole Spanish team, who had their best scorer in Angela Salvadores (16 points).
