Croatia fought hard but Spain proved too strong, winning 65-60 in Qualifying Round Group F to confirm their place in the Quarter-Finals of the U16 European Championship Women.
Croatia dominated the first quarter with a strong defence, forcing Spain to take risks in their shot selection.
Two very balanced teams kept fighting hard to gain a remarkable lead, with Spain being on top at half-time, 27-21.
In the second half, Croatia reacted and almost tied the game, but even if they still were stronger under the basket, grabbing more rebounds than the Spanish, they staggered with Spain's high pressure defence, committing more turnovers and letting the Spanish find confidence in the last quarter, when they reached a 15-point advantage, and kept it until the end of the game.
Elena Capella, with 19 points, was the best scorer for Spain, benefiting also from the great performances of Angela Salvadores, who had 15 points, and Helena Orts, who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Iva Slonjsak poured in 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Croatians.
The Spaniards look to sign off from Group F with a win against the Czech Republic on Wednesday, while Croatia has one last opportunity to get their first win in the Qualifying Round, facing the Netherlands.
