Belgium Buzzer Beater Stuns French

As overtime loomed, Julie Allemand became Belgium's heroine as her three-pointer secured a semi-final place at the U16 European Championship for Women with a dramatic 70-67 win over France.

But it was heart-breaking for Les Bleues who had come from eight points down in the fourth quarter to lead, only to see their hopes crushed at the very end.

"It was what coach Diels drew up in the time-out," said Allemand, who was entrusted with the last shot after a time-out with 1.1 seconds on the clock. "I got the chance, I hit it and hoped it went in."

Belgium led for most of the tie but France's zone defence caused them unexpected problems and at half-time, they were only 35-33 in front.

However a 10-0 start to the third quarter sent Arvid Diels' side clear and they seem poised to secure the tie. The French, trailing 66-58 with four minutes left in the fourth, had other ideas.

Clementine Morateur hit a three-pointer to ignite a 9-0 run that set up a tense finale. Hind Ben Abdelkader converted the last of her team-high 18 points from the line with 19 seconds left but it was left to Allemand to make the biggest shot of all as Belgium secured a semi against Russia or Italy on Saturday.

Bérengère Dinga-Mbomi had a game-high 20 for France.
