Germany, Portugal and Lithuania all booked safe passage into the second round of the B Division of the U16 European Championships for Women in Arad after maintaining their perfect starts to the tournament on Friday.
16 points from Portuguese guard Laura Ferreira helped secure a 66-34 victory over Luxembourg as her side shook off a poor first quarter with a 46-11 run. They top group A, ahead of Ukraine who lost 52-47 to Latvia in a tight contest where 20 points from Kitija Laksa proved decisive.
Eva Lisec had 15 points as Slovenia began their challenge in Group B with a 71-42 rout of Estonia and they will now meet England on Saturday to decide the Group B winner.
Lithuania, paced by 21 from Dalia Belickaite, impressed in a 68-55 defeat of Bulgaria in Group C while hosts Romania picked up their first win, Iulia Raileanu grabbing 19 points and 13 rebounds, as they shook off an early deficit to sweep past Israel 71-55 to set up a potentially crucial tie with Bulgaria on Saturday evening.
And in Group D, Lisa Janko had a game-high 19 points as Germany beat Ireland 80-43, pulling away with a 25-4 run in the second quarter. While Denmark - paced by 24 from Sofie Preetzmann - came good in the second half to see off Switzerland 64-48.
