GAME REPORT

Spain Scrap Past Tough Turks

Spain booked a date with Belgium on Sunday to decide the winner of the U16 European Championship for Women after seeing off Turkey in the semi-final in Cagliari.

But Erkan Metin's side provided the Spanish with arguably their hardest test of the tournament before their resistance finally faded as the favourites secured a 79-52 victory.

It made it a perfect eight out of eight wins for Evaristo Perez and his team. One more and they can repeat their triumph of 2009 but the Turks ensured they were properly tested.

The Spanish never trailed, building their advantage steadily throughout the contest and ultimately, Turkey gave up too many turnovers that were duly punished.

36-29 ahead at half-time and feeling concerted pressure for the first time, Perez's players hit ten unanswered points to calm any fears.

And led by 17 points from Maria Arrojo, they were able to coast through the closing stages as Turkey's admirable attack came up short.

"I think that's the toughest game we've had so far," said Perez. "The players were a little nervous at the start. Turkey brought a good game plan.

"But we made our run, we solved the problems and that's going to stand us in good stead against Belgium."

The Turks - led by 13 from Nurcan Basaran - will play off with Italy for the bronze medal.
