Italy notched their third straight victory at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women by fending off Hungary 64-53 to advance to the Qualifying Round as winners of Group C.

They will be joined in the Qualifying Round by Belarus, who beat Germany 60-54 for their first win in Group D thanks to 12 points and nine rebounds by Maryia Filonchyk.

Aliaksandra Shymkaviak also scored 12 points while Aliaksandra Musatava had 11 points and Valiansina Sivaplias chipped in 10 as Belarus improved to 1-2 to move into the next round.

Germany remained winless and will play against relegation despite 14 points by Clara Herrmann and 12 points and 12 rebounds from Sonja Greinacher. Christina Schnorr added 11 points and Julia Gaudermann grabbed 11 rebounds in a losing effort.

Neither team gained a real advantage in the first quarter though Shymkaviak hit two three-pointers and Filonchyk nailed one from long range to give Belarus a 17-12 lead after one period. Back-to-back baskets by Musatava made it a seven-point game and Sivaplias's score left Belarus ahead 25-16 midway through the second. But Herrmann knocked down a trey to start a 12-2 Germany surge to go into intermission ahead 28-27.

Hermann's foul shots gave Germany a 38-36 lead before Filonchyk sparked a 7-0 run with a three-pointer. The Germans, however, again finished a quarter strong with a 9-0 run for a 47-43 advantage going into the fourth. Finja Schaake's triple gave Germany a 52-50 lead only to see Musatava answer right back with a three-ball and two more baskets for a 57-52 lead with a minute to play. Leading by three points, Maryia Rashchenia blocked Greinacher's shot with 32 seconds to play and Karalina Padshyvalava scored with 26 seconds left and then converted a free throw on the immediate unsportsmanlike foul on Schaake to ice the game.

Italy remained perfect in Katowice at 3-0 with a 64-53 win over Hungary.

Debora Carangelo led the way with 23 points while Alessandra Formica and Gaia Gorini both added 10 points for Giovanni Lucchesi's side.

Hungary's loss drops them to 1-2 through they still have chances of reaching the Qualifying Round, depending on later results from Group C. Judit Mányoky was Hungary's leading scorer with 15 points and four steals while Melinda Késöi had 11 points and Bettina Baksa chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort.

Hungary stayed with Italy early trailing just 9-8 midway through the first period before the Italians scored five straight points to lead 14-10 after 10 minutes. Mányoky's triple knotted the game at 17-17 but Judit Balogh's offense stalled as Italy went on an 11-0 surge over nearly seven minutes to pull ahead 28-17. Késöi did knock down a three-ball as Hungary pulled back to within 33-24 at the break.

Késöi hit another triple early in the second half and Mányoky's score cut the deficit to 36-34. But Carangelo and Gorini combined to re-establish a 49-40 lead before Baksa's three just before the third quarter buzzer for a 49-43 scoreline. Carangelo opened the fourth with a three-pointer which would get answered by Mányoky's triple to trim the margin to 52-48. But Carangelo and Gorini combined for eight straight points and Carangelo's three-ball made it 60-48 with three minutes left - not enough time for Hungary to mount another comeback attempt.
