Group A: Czechs Remain Perfect, Belarus Advance

29 July 2007
The Czech Republic advanced from Group A of the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women with a perfect 3-0 record after beating Hungary 63-50 thanks to 14 points each from Adela Filarova and Gabriela Medunova.

The finalists from last summer scored the final nine points of the game to pull away from the tough Hungarians in the fourth quarter.

The Czechs gave up just seven points in the final period in the battle to decide supremacy in Group A. Richard Fousek's team scored the first 10 points on their way to a 24-12 lead.

But Dorottya Tamis hit two three-pointers to spark a 17-0 Hungary run.

Hungary trailed again 44-34 late in the third quarter but closed the gap to 46-43 going into the fourth. The Czechs opened a nine-point lead only to have Reka Balint answer with two baskets to make it 54-50 with two minutes left.

Tamis missed a lay-up and committed two turnovers which allowed Lenka Bartakova to bury a three-pointer with 1:02 left to put the game out of reach 61-50.

"It was a very nervous match. I believe we are a much better team, but we didn't show it. At the end of the match we really fought and the result was deserved," said Czech assistant coach Petr Pajkrt.

Medunova added 12 rebounds, eight steals and two blocked shots to lead Czech Republic. Melinda Kesoi was Hungary's top scorer with 16 points.

Hungary dropped to 2-1 but also advanced to the Qualifying Round.

Joining Czech Republic and Hungary from Group A were Belarus, who knocked off Slovakia 75-65 for their first victory of the tournament.

Maryia Filonchyk led all players with 32 points and 15 rebounds while Alitsyia Kurouskaya added 12 points for Belarus, who improved to 1-2.

Slovakia remained winless despite 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists from Martina Kissova and will play in the Classification Round to determine which two teams are relegated to Division B.
