The First Round at the U18 European Championship Women Division B came to a close on Monday with eight teams advancing to the next phase and keeping intact their hopes of earning promotion to Division A. 

Bulgaria, Portugal, Hungary and Denmark will battle it out in Second Round Group E while Germany,Belarus, England and Lithuania make up Group F.

The top two teams from each Second Round group clinch a place in the Semi-Finals while the bottom two will play classification games for 5th to 8th place.


On Monday, Portugal won for the third time in as many games in Strumica.

Mariyana Kostourkova's side were triumphant in their Group A game against Israel, 70-40.

Laura Ferreira had 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals for the Portuguese, who trailed 17-10 after the opening frame but hit back for a 31-24 advantage at half-time.

Portugal outscored Israel in the second half, 39-16.

Also in Group A, Hungary romped to a 69-44 victory over Austria to clinch second place and a spot in the next round.

Amadea Szamosi led the Hungarians' balanced scoring attack with 12 points.

There were also wins for England, Lithuania, Ukraine, Finland, Denmark and Belarus.

In Group B, the Danes prevailed 69-62 over Switzerland behind Maria Jespersen's 26 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and one blocked shot.

Laura Perrenoud had 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in defeat.

The Danes finished second in Group B and advanced to the Second Round with first-place Bulgaria (4-0).

Cheridene Green poured in 22 points and corralled 10 rebounds for England in a 59-48 triumph over Latvia.

Leonard Busch's team was in command by half-time with a 33-18 advantage.

England didn't finish first in Group C, but second.

Top spot went to Belarus, who prevailed 48-42 over F.Y.R. of Macedonia.

Hanna Kalenta led Belarus with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

In Group D, Ukraine won a low-scoring affair against Montenegro, 48-38.

Miriam Uro-Nile finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Ukrainians.

They were pipped to second place by Lithuania, who got 19 points from Ieva Kazlauskaite and were 82-58 winners over Scotland.

Germany finished with a 4-0 record to top Group D ahead of Lithuania (3-1) and Ukraine (2-2).
