European Round-Up: Ros, Pecs Make Moves

19 June 2008

MiZo Pecs and Ros Casares have fortified their line-ups ahead of the next EuroLeague Women campaign.

Hungarian giants MiZo, who waved good-bye to long-time coach Laszlo Ratgeber following their domestic championship series defeat to MKB Euroleasing Sopron, have signed former US Valenciennes center Nicole Ohlde.

The 26-year-old, a former college basketball star at Kansas State University and currently in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx, played for the Rest of World team at the EuroLeague Women All-Star Game last year in the Moscow Region.

She averaged more than 13 points and nine rebounds per game last season in the EuroLeague.

Ratgeber has been linked with Spartak Moscow Region but that club has yet to announce which coach will replace the hugely successful Natalia Hejkova.

Spartak decided to part with their championship winning coach Hejkova on June 5 but gave no reason why.

Ros Casares, meanwhile, have sealed the return of Anna Montañana to the club.

The Spain international, who will play at this summer's Olympics, averaged 15.1 points and 6.6 rebounds in the EuroLeague Women with Perfumerias Avenida this season.

Montañana's announcement comes just days after the club revealed they had signed Czech international Jana Vesela, one of the stars at Gambrinus Brno.

Ros Casares general manager Carme Lluveras said: "Anna Montañana is a player that has in recent campaigns made an important leap in quality. Now was the time to get her back because she has proved she can compete at the highest European level."

Ros have also agreed to deals with Amaya Valdemoro, the EuroBasket 2007 MVP and this year's EuroLeague Women All Star Game MVP, as well as Ruzomberok's promising Slovakia international Regina Palusna.

Montañana played for Ros Casares in the 2005-06 season. She will be presented to the media on Friday in Valencia.

Navarro Headed Home, Markovski on the Move

There was another big story in Spain on Thursday with Juan Carlos Navarro deciding he's had enough of the NBA and choosing to return home to Barcelona on a new five-year contract.

Navarro, a Spain international, is to gather with the national team soon to begin preparing for the Beijing Olympics.

Other big players on the move are Nikola Vujcic, the former Croatia international who has left Maccabi Tel Aviv to play for Olympiacos coach Panagiotis Yannakis.

On the coaching front, Zare Markovski, the man who led Virtus Bologna to the 2007 EuroCup Final Four in Girona, has taken over at Coppa Italia winners Air Avellino.

Markovski started this season with Armani Jeans Milano but was sacked early in the campaign.
