Agusti Sans and Spain made a big statement in their opening game in Liepaja
Spain were able to ride a balanced scoring attack to register an 88-61 win against Italy in Liepaja on Thursday.
Led by 18 points from Juan Hernangomez, Spain shot 57% from the field as four players scored in double-digits.
Spain raced away to a perfect start by making eight of its first 10 field goal attempts and established a 17-4 lead on the back of a hot 10-point first quarter from Hernangomez.
Dominated throughout the game, a determined Italian side managed to cut the lead twice to within single digits in the second and third quarters, but 23 points from the Spanish bench and a commanding advantage in the paint and in transition ended any chance of an Italian comeback.
Hernangomez finished with a game-high 18 points and five rebounds. Agusti Sans chipped in 16 points, five rebounds and five assists while Alberto Abalde and Ilimane Diop scored 14 and 13 points respectively.
