Belgiums win over the Netherlands sees the team through to the next stage
Belgium assured their place in Division A for next summer, while the Netherlands were relegated to Division B

Belgium came back from 13 points down in the final period to save their Division A status and stun the Netherlands with a 48-47 win in classification action at the U16 European Championship Women.

The Dutch team led 39-26 heading into the fourth quarter, but they will play in Division B in 2014 after failing to withstand a furious fightback from their neighbours.

Belgium scored 10 unanswered points to open the final period, and Sofia Ouahabi drained two free throws to bring her team within one before hitting a three-pointer to give Belgium the lead.

Laura Westerik's lay-up with 28 seconds remaining gave the Netherlands a 47-46 advantage but Marie Cole made the crucial shot with 14 seconds left, and Anne van Vlijmen's final effort fell short.

The Netherlands had seemed in control, Westerik's three-pointer at the start of the second quarter giving them their biggest lead at 22-7. Laura Henket's free throw brought Belgium within six in the third period, but a strong finish had seemed to put the Dutch team out of sight. Belgium took their last chance for salvation in the final period, condemning their neighbours.

Serena-Lynn Geldof was again strong in the middle for Belgium, with 12 points and 11 rebounds plus four blocks. Ouahabi added 11 points, four assists and four steals.

Janis Ndiba had 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for the Netherlands and Westerik ended with 12 points and nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough to save them from relegation.
