|Vassilis Spanoulis headlines Greece's squad for EuroBasket 2013|
Greece head coach Andrea Trinchieri informed Ian Vougioukas on Thursday that he will not travel with the team to EuroBasket 2013, a decision that reveals the Greeks' final 12-man roster for the tournament.
The names of the 12 Greek players that will board the plane to Slovenia have not yet been announced officially but, according to a statement on the Greek federation's (EOK) website, Trinchieri spoke both with Vougioukas and Vassilis Kavvadas about his decision, prior to the Thursday game against Italy in the Acropolis tournament.
The 22-year-old Kavvadas, a 2.05m center of imposing physical strength, will therefore be the surprise inclusion to the Greek squad that will compete at the EuroBasket.
He received playing time with Athens club Panionios in the Greek A1 league and the Eurocup last season, and was called up to join Greece's preparations in late July, as cover for the injured Sofoklis Schortsanitis.
Schortsanitis never recovered from his injury and later another center, Yannis Bourousis, fractured a rib and had to leave training camp for approximately two weeks.
Trinchieri did not include Kavvadas in the team for last weekend's friendly tournament in Ulm, Germany and it was thought that the young big man's first participation in a training camp with the senior national team would end there.
But after the Greeks picked up in Germany their only two defeats during preparations, to Bosnia and Herzegovina and F.Y.R. of Macedonia, respectively, the coaching staff thought that Kavvadas and his physical presence could be the answer to the defensive problems they diagnosed in the paint.
Olympiacos star guard Vassilis Spanoulis is to headline the Greek team, which also includes a further four Euroleague 2013 champions in Kostas Sloukas, Kostas Papanikolaou, Georgios Printezis and Stratos Perperoglou.
Captain Antonis Fotsis, Nikos Zisis, Kostas Kaimakoglou, Michail Bramos, Loukas Mavrokefalidis, Bourousis and, of course, Kavvadas, make up the rest of 12-man squad that will represent Greece in the big event in Slovenia.
Greece were drawn in First Round Group D at the EuroBasket, together with Italy, Russia, Turkey, Finland and Sweden.
