Russia secured their place in Division A as they sent a Thomas Akyazili-inspired Belgium team into the relegation round.

Timofey Yakushin had 17 points for Russia with Oleg Starodubov and Dmitrii Cheburkin added 13 each, but Akyazili was arguably the star of the show with 34 points in the losing cause.

It was not enough to keep last year's Division B champions from a scrap for survival over the weekend.

For all Akyazili's efforts, Russia won the game on the boards, outrebounding Belgium 50-29, with Ilya Karpenkov grabbing 11 rebounds to go with his nine points.

Russia took control of the game late in the second period.

Cheburkin's three-pointer began a 12-1 run to the buzzer which game them a 45-33 lead at half-time, and it was all they would need as Belgium struggled to again get the deficit into single figures.

Russia's lead grew, and they were up 57-41 when Yakushin sank two free throws with 4:16 to go in the third quarter.

Akyazili reeled off seven quick points to get it back to 60-50 with a big three 46 seconds before the period ended, but they could get no closer as Russia saw the game out.

Maxim Proshchenko also scored in double figures for Russia with 10 points while Dmitrii Dobrynin had seven points and nine assists.

Sigfredo joined Akyazili in double figures for Belgium, scoring 12.
