Alexandra Maerz has been named new head coach of the German women's national team, the German Basketball Federation (DBB) announced on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old takes over from Andreas Wagner, who had coached the team during the EuroBasket Women 2013 Qualification Round, before joining FC Bayern Munich as assistant coach last October.

Germany missed qualification for the Final Round after finishing third in Group D with a 3-5 record.

The DBB hopes to take the next step and build a brighter future with Maerz, who is happy about her new function.

"This is an assignment everyone working in basketball is wishing for. I'm very honoured," she said.

"It makes sense to continue the work of my two antecessors (Bastian Wernthaler and Andreas Wagner).

"I will meet with Andreas Wagner to discuss what worked well last summer and what didn't."

Maerz, a former player, has been working as assistant and head coach for German women's youth teams since 2003.

She last coached Germany at the U16 European Championship Women in Miskolc last summer.

Having focused on the development of young players in the past years, Maerz hopes the top prospect will make an easy transition from junior to senior national team.

"Making the team younger is very important to me. The top talents should preferably be integrated straight from the U20 team," she stated.

Her first task as new national team head coach will be the EuroBasket Women 2015 1st Qualification Round, which will take place next summer.

The Germans were drawn in Group D, where they will face Portugal, Israel and F.Y.R. of Macedonia.

DBB Sports Director Peter Radegast is optimistic about Germany's chances.

"We're looking forward to the challenges. Our young team has a good chance of reaching the play-offs," he said after the draw.

The winner of each of the four groups will qualify for the play-off stage, where they will play semi-finals and finals on a home-and-away basis.

The winner of the final will automatically qualify for EuroBasket Women 2015.
